According to philosopher Ken Wilber, there existed a previously overlooked mistake in the thinking regarding non-rational states of mind which he calls the pre/trans fallacy. It can be difficult to distinguish the difference between pre-rational and trans-rational cognition. The example Wilber gives involves the two psychoanalytic greats, Freud and his once-pupil Jung. Freud’s invalidation of the mystical experience of cosmic consciousness is an example of the pre/trans fallacy in the direction of reduction. Freud viewed the mystic’s union with the absolute as a regression to the infantile oceanic feeling of bliss in the womb. Wilber warns that the fragmented ego can be transcended as wholeness is recaptured. Suspension in the amniotic fluid of the worldly mother and suspension in the aether of the universal mother appear identical, yet one is entirely mundane and one is utterly spiritual. Whereas Freud held that rationality is the pinnacle of mankind’s consciousness and thus any irrationality must be a movement backwards, Jung’s acceptance of a higher form of rationality caused his to commit the converse mistake, thereby elevating pre-personal elements to the trans-personal. Reading deeply into the indissociated artwork of early humanity led Jung to project a symbolic mythology of transpersonal importance termed archetypes. Maintaining particular views on the possibilities of consciousness growth without recognizing the distinctions in otherwise possible states of awareness can allow one to misinterpret or not even grasp the nature of a deeper spirituality. This can also be quite perilous. It is difficult to number the many occurrences of a sociopathic cult leader’s negative aspects being misinterpreted and assigned a higher quality than afforded. It is easy to ponder the quantity of people suffering with schizophrenia that have been medicated by a physician confusing spiritual emergence with emergency. Some highly intelligent students are placed in remedial classes due to unsatisfactory grades, when their poor performance is related to boredom and not difficulty in comprehension. Because it can be extended to many facets of psychology, a great service is rendered to all by familiarizing oneself with the pre/trans fallacy.
