If you're interested in upgrading your systems video card, then there are certain things that you should know before you go right on ahead. There are numerous types of graphics cards. Having some understanding of what you need, will help eliminate much of that stress that is associated with purchasing your new card.

The first cards you have are the PCI express types. If you want to use this type of card, then you'll need a motherboard that supports it. These cards are typically more advanced and more high-end than other graphics solutions.

AGP graphics cards, much like PCI express cards only work on motherboards that support its format. If you have an AGP motherboard, then you'll have to check your motherboards manual in order to find out what speed it operates at. AGP 8x is the fastest, but there are some motherboards that are only capable of handling 1x and 4x speeds.

PCI cards, just like those discussed above fit into your motherboards PCI slot. It's highly unlikely that you'll have a card that uses this old format unless you have an extremely old machine. PCI cards are extremely outdated today.

The last type is the integrated video card. These cards are the standard that comes with many systems today, unless you upgraded your machine before or after you received it. If you want to upgrade your video card from an integrated one, then it'll all depend on the availability of slots in your motherboard. Today, they are the slowest graphics solutions on the market.

Before you begin your own personal upgrade project, it's important you have at least basic knowledge on your systems motherboard. Understanding the different types of graphics card that you need will make the task that much easier. Graphics card are not highly complicated devices, but having all the appropriate information will always be handy.
