After spending some days with family, we have a tendency to departed early one afternoon from Penn Central station in Baltimore. After a brief trip to Washington D.C. we have a tendency to boarded the train that was to require us out to Chicago. By the first evening, we tend to had traveled through West Virginia and into Ohio about the time we tend to decided to settle down. We have a tendency to had figured on sleeping within the coach but soon found out that a dozen squealing kids and seats not made for sleeping would not make for a fun trip. Fortunately there was one accessible, and we tend to were quite relieved to pay the remainder of the evening in our compact sleeping car watching the snow covered passing towns.
The following day we arrived in Chicago in the first afternoon. We have a tendency to had a 3 hour layover there, thus we tend to decided to venture out and explore the Windy City. That set up was soon changed after walking out into a number of the coldest weather I've ever experienced. Walking the streets, and sidestepping piles of snow, we have a tendency to quickly determined that hanging out in the closest bar made a ton more sense than climbing over these miniature Mount Everest's. After several drinks and bit of excellent food, and a few more drinks we staggered back to the train to continue our journey.
Once the primary night, my sister and I decided that a sleeper was a necessity, thus when creating arrangements for one, we settled in for a protracted trip. One amongst the attendants named James fastened us up with sleeping arrangements and mentioned that he was going to take good care people, and do each thing attainable therefore that us 'lovebirds' would have a great trip. I told James that nah, we have a tendency to weren't from West Virginia simply a sister and brother traveling across country. I am approximately positive he understood what I meant, but we have a tendency to had fun with it the remainder of the trip. Between him and Hambone our different attendant, they indeed took care of our wants and were quite helpful.
The subsequent day took us through Missouri and Kansas. Although watching the passing landscape is enjoyable, when a whereas you begin to want something to interrupt up the monotony of sitting and we soon started trying forward to the meals that were provided with the sleeper. Train food is surprisingly good. In dining cars, area is at a premium, thus if there are two of you, they will match you up with another couple. We have a tendency to were matched up with a couple that had a sleeper across from us. We tend to referred to as them Edith and Mumbles. Throughout the meal, Edith would talk just about non stop. Her husband on the opposite hand was solemn, and whenever he did provide any conversation it absolutely was invariably thus low that you could not understand what he was saying. Once a time or two whenever Mumbles would speak, we would just nod our head and say something like, "is that right?", and continue with our meal.
The following day was a beautiful day and good for viewing the passing landscape. I was amazed at the open space and ranges that create up New Mexico. It's hard to understand the vastness of this country until you've got traveled across it. I've done it several times and each time I'm blown away at the size and scope of the land. Traveling by train allows you to take a seat back and very take it all in.
While traveling through New Mexico we had some unscheduled R&R joined of the engines failed as we tend to were climbing up the hill, therefore while looking forward to a replacement we embarked and wandered into the nearby city for a bit. It seemed more like a city in Mexico than the U.S. Tons of very little bars and Mexican restaurants. Once a bit, we wandered back to the train, and on with our trip. That night we tend to traveled through New Mexico and into Arizona. Along the way we tend to had set to embark in Flagstaff, Arizona as there have been a few places that we have a tendency to needed to see, like the Grand Canyon. The subsequent day we went there and drove on down to Phoenix. We have a tendency to missed the last half of the journey, that being the trip on to L.A. Maybe next time-NOT!
A couple of tips; if you're visiting be on the train for additional than a day, get a sleeper! They come in 2 basic packages, the economy version and also the deluxe. The economy may be a no frills and quite compact sleeper. The seats fold down for sleeping and up during day use. The deluxe on the opposite hand is roomier and comes with a shower and steeper price. Another factor to stay in mind is last time I checked, Amtrak would enable you three overnight departures meaning that you'll be able to get off of the train, keep in an exceedingly hotel and decide up the train the subsequent evening. Since the train solely comes through once each day, you'll have to make positive you're there on time, or else you'll be spending another day at that location.
Traveling by train could be a nice way to travel and see places that you have never seen before during a method that solely a train will provide. Watching the passing landscape during a panoramic travel automobile certainly beats the bus, and also the food is a lot of better. Even Mumbles would agree with me on that.
