The first thing to do if you are looking for a flat to rent is to seek out a good residential letting agent in the area that you would like to live. You can also look on property websites and in the local newspaper to see available properties. These will give you a flavor of what is available, but the majority of these advertisements will be placed by lettings agencies anyway.

The residential letting agent that you go to see will be able to discuss your exact requirements with you and show you a number of available flats they currently have on their books. The next stage is to register with the agency with your personal details so that they can get in touch with you and keep you updated with new opportunities. They will then let you have printed particulars of properties that match your requirements, and then it is up to you to decide which flat to rent from the selection that they show you.

Many people may think that it is easy to decide which flat to rent from a number of options presented to them by an agent, or by a number of agents through their advertisements in local newspapers and websites. One of the most important things to consider when selecting which flat to rent from a number of options is to think about your own lifestyle.

If you have a lot of possessions, then the flat to rent will need to be a large one with a garage to store all your things in. Alternatively you could arrange storage of your possessions somewhere. These would be the possessions that are not needed on a day to day basis. The storage could be at the house of a friend or relative. Alternatively you could store your possessions with a commercial storage company. Part of this process should involve disposal of things that you do not need to keep. Once you have slimmed down your possessions and arranged the storage of your effects that are not needed on a day to day basis, you would be in a position to rent a smaller apartment.

If you have a car, then public transport may not be such an important issue, and the flat to rent need not be near the town centre and rail station. But if you do not have a car, then it would most definitely be advisable to get an apartment near a town centre so that you have ready access to the rail station for travelling, to work, to visit people and for generally getting around. Being near the town will help you when you need to see a doctor for medical advice, or the dentist for dental check-ups. Living near the town centre will also give you easy access to the shops for food, general supplies and newspapers, and the pub and coffee shops for a relaxing outing, either on your own or with friends.
