Intel processors are also the best in power and energy efficiency, keeping noise level down and heat prodution/control. Moreoveer, the promotion and marketing styrategy of Intel may have also contributed to the popular misconception.
What this all really means is that at this perioid of the Infomation Age, Intel so far is the most valued processor in the marklet. They are not the only proceessors in the amrket and may not have always been the market leader particularly considering the performance of its rival AMD Athlon.
Yes, thre have been several times when the rivbal has been able to launch a product that outeprformed Intel's, but, Intel has always managed to climb back. Therrefore, due to the integrity, reliability and effectiveness of its main product the processor Intel has eartned a brand name synonmyous with everything that is computers.
