Do you know about the saying you are what you eat? In a way, that is correct, because having a diet of unhealthy foods could make you become unhealthy person. The meals we eat are very important as they enable us to develop, remain functional, and prevent us from getting ill. Therefore, for those who value your well being, you need to know as much about healthy eating as possible.

Having a healthy diet is essential from the moment that we are born. During our childhood, we develop quite quickly and this is partly because of the the foods that we eat. Foods all come with nutritional materials that not only gives us energy to live our every day lives, but also with the same substances that construct our bones, muscles, and organ tissues. Not having enough of the nutrients that we need can cause a lot of problems, and may even result in stunted growth. For nursing mothers, having the proper nutrition is essential as breast milk contains the necessary nutrients that a child must have to grow and develop properly. When we grow older, the nutrients that we need can be found in our food, however we should not think that having a proper diet is no longer important for our growth after going through puberty. Our cells are continuously breaking down and rebuilding, therefore having a proper diet continues to be essential for our growth throughout our lives.

Having a healthy diet is also necessary for us to keep functioning. In the course of our daily lives, we make use of energy to think, walk, speak, breathe, and carry out other actions. The amount of energy that our body needs to do these actions comes from two places: the fat reserves within our body or daily meals. In case you don’t eat healthy meals, you will discover that you're storing more fats than your body needs, or you aren’t getting enough and you're feeling sluggish or weak. Together with energy-providing nutrients, like fats and carbohydrates, we also need the proper nutrition in order for our organs to function properly. Hormones and other substances within the body ensure that everything is working properly. When you don’t eat the proper nutrients, your body will not be able to produce these hormones and, consequently, cannot operate properly.

Finally, having the proper nutrition is necessary to prevent us from getting ill. When we do not get the correct nutrients, or our body’s natural immune system against any illnesses weakens, it will result in viruses and micro organisms assaulting the body. It works like a well-trained army - if they don't have enough food to eat, they will not be able to operate properly during battle. If our bodies do not have the proper nutrition and plenty of water, they will simply not be able to operate on a daily basis. It is therefore essential that we learn how to eat healthy foods, and it is better if we begin our lessons as children.
