Most experts recommend using only a sufficient amount of oil to lubricate your baitcasting reels. A light coating is enough to ensure that your reel will be in good working condition. Lubricants such as Reel Magic and Lanigan come highly recommended to do this job. Shimano makes excellent reel grease and reel oil as well. If you do not have any reel oil on hand, you can also use WD 40. Remember not to drown your reel with oil. Use the oil sparingly.
Before lubricating your baitcasting reels, it is important to clean them thoroughly first. To clean your reels, all you need are pieces of cloth, soapy water, clean water, a soft bristle brush and cotton buds. Apply the soapy water to the exterior of the reel using a clean cloth. If there are other stains and dirt particles stubbornly attached to your reel, use a toothbrush to get rid of them.
After you have rinsed and dried the baitcasting reel, unscrew the reel’s retainer cap and remove the spool. Clean the spool with the cloth and soapy water, making sure you remove the algae and debris deposits inside. Rinse and dry the spool.
Next, using the soft bristle brush, clean the gears of the spool to remove the build up of lubricants and oil. This is the time to apply a fresh coat of reel oil. Next, clean the reel’s bail mechanism, again with the cloth and soapy water. After rinsing and drying the bail mechanism, apply a coat of fresh reel oil as well.
After applying oil or lubricants to the interiors of your baitcasting reel, you should also coat the entire surface of the reel with oil so that it will be protected from the harsh elements that it is regularly exposed to.
However, even if you feel that it is not yet time to clean your baitcasting reel, it is still important to ensure that you lubricate and oil it regularly. To determine whether or not your reel is in need of oiling, test how freely your reel spins by flicking your finger on the reel. A baitcasting reel must be able to rotate twelve times, at least, with a single flick of your finger. If it rotates less than that, it is a sign that your reel is in need of oiling.
Again, do not use too much oil on your baitcasting reel as doing so will do more harm than good. It is also a good idea to wear gloves while oiling your reels so that you do not get any oil on your skin.
