Before starting any practice session or game it is always a good idea to go through a stretching routine. This is essential to minimise any chance of injury. Injuring yourself when you did not at least try to ensure an injury could be prevented, is the last thing you want to have happen to yourself, and as a result not be able to play the rest of the game, or possibly for an extended period of time.

As a beginner in the world of golf, you will be unaware of how far you are able to send a golf ball with any of the golf clubs. You cannot really go by the results of other golfers' hits, due to the fact that you cannot be sure that they will be the same as you. You need to find this out for yourself for yourself. In order to achieve this, you should take your clubs to a driving range, and hitting a good number of balls down the range to find out your average distance per club. To begin with hit 15 balls down the fairway with the 7 iron, in order to get the average distance travelled. Be sure to hit all the balls towards exactly the same target, otherwise you will not be possible to get a true average distance travelled for the club.

As soon as the average distance that you can hit a golf ball with a 7 iron has been worked out, the next task is to see how far the 6 iron will hit the ball. Golf balls, when hit with 6 irons make the ball travel further than they do when hit with 7 irons. Conversely the next iron above the 7 iron, the 8 iron, will not hit the ball as far as the 7 iron. This is important to remember. The higher the iron, the further the ball will travel, and of course, the lower the iron the least distance the ball will travel.

Wind direction will affect both the distance and direction a golf ball will travel. The ball when met by a wind blowing against the front, would end up travelling further than it normal would. The reason for the is because the wind is helping the ball's trajectory. Conversely, if the wind is blowing at your back, then the ball will be prevented from travelling as far as it would normally. This is due to the ball is travelling into the wind. Now, with this knowledge in hand, if faced with a wind direction that will assist your ball's trajectory, but you do not want to have the ball travel too far, then you need to use an higher numbered club than normal. Also, if you are dealing with a wind direction that will impede the distance travelled by your ball, than you need to choose a make use of if you still require the ball to travel further than it would do normally.

With the knowledge of your abilities acquired from practising, and being aware of things like wind direction, making the correct choice of club to use becomes a lot more accurate, than grabbing whatever club you like and hitting and hoping. When choosing the club that is right for the shot you will need to make, you need to take into consideration the distance from your golf ball to the target, and factor in the current playing conditions (wind speed, location, etc.). A good guide on wind direction and speed is to look at the flags positioned on the golf course, and notice how the flag itself is being affected by the wind. This will be a good indication of the club number you need to use in relation to the one you would have chosen of on a day with perfect weather conditions. For example if you would have used a 7 iron, but a nearby flag is flopping up and down towards you, then you need to make use of a lower numbered club, such as a 6 iron. If the flag is blowing straight out and towards you, you need to use a 5 or lower iron. Conversely, if the flag is blowing away from you you then need to gain a club number or more, otherwise the wind will make your ball go further than you wanted it to go.
