Wakeboarding is a sport that combines the techniques of waterskiing, snowboarding and surfing. They are done on a piece of equipment called a wakeboard that is towed by either a boat or a cable. Wakeboarding boats run at the speed of eighteen to twenty-four miles per hour. The speed of the boat will ultimately depend on how fast the wake boarder wants to, in relation to his skill level, the current water conditions, the weight of the rider, and the wake board’s size. A wakeboard boat looks similar to inboard runabout boats and measure around eighteen to twenty-four feet in length. The most prestigious wakeboarding boats are Tige, MasterCraft, Centurion, Moombi, Ski Nautique and Malibu, to mention a few.
So what makes wakeboard boats different from other boats like runabout boats and ski boats? First of all, a wakeboard boat will usually have a wakeboard tower. A wakeboard tower is a stainless steel or aluminum frame, that is cage-like and attached to the front of the boat’s deck. The purpose of a wakeboard tower is to provide added height when pulling the wakeboarder. This makes it easier for the wakeboarder to do tricks such as jumping, and to provide more control and balance for them as well. In order to increase the waves or wakes on the water, wakeboard boats make use of a ballast system, wherein water is pumped in and out of the ballast bags . When water is added to the ballast bags, bigger wakes are created.
As opposed to ski boats, wakeboard boats have a V-shaped hull, while ski boats have flat bottoms. They also have inboard engines. The propeller shaft exits at the back of the boat and is located directly under the wakeboard boat’s engine. The purpose for this layout is that the weight on the boat is distributed more evenly and it also reduces the risks of having a spinning propeller near the boat’s stern. However, most wakeboard boats were originally ski boats that were modified or used as wakeboard boats. They use fall under the same category of watersport boats, because they are ultimately high-powered boats that are used for watersports activities.
Although some boats claim to be wakeboard ski boards, meaning boats that combine the features of a wakeboard boat and a ski boat in one, it is still best to get one that specializes in the particular sport you are after. The reason for this is that these two sports require very different layouts on the boat. For instance, waterski boats are designed to hold a precise course that will not create any wakes. Meanwhile, wakeboard boats run slower yet create large or small waves depending on the tricks the wakeboarder wants to perform.
