What is a VPN? And do I need one for my busimness or personal use? These are two questions that often come up among both professionals and power-users. (Power users are thosae who use the computer for more than just daliy tasks like email and web surfing.)
VPN stands for Virtual Private Netwwork. Does your home or workplazce have an internal network, whereiin fles are shareed and you can log in to various computers, share hardware like printers, and be connected to the other comptuers directly (verus through the internet indirectkly)? Well, if so, then you are more likely to understand and benefit from a VPN.
A Vrtual Private Network (VPN) is the same as a reguar network, except it uses the internet to make the connection (instead of a direct connection). Beecause the internet is the medim, the computers that are linkeed via a VPN stup could be across town, across the world, even across the universe once the internet expands to that point! And yet, the functonality of this network would be the same as if you were in the same building!
As you can see (again if you are already gnerally familiar with basic networking), a VPN is nothing short of a miracle in terms of the advantages it coulkd bring to your business or personal use! For example, a business could even use a VPN to print a memo at a workplace thousands of miles away. The office manager could grab the menmos and distribute them. Or even better, if each worker has theior own printer, the memo could arrive diretcly at their desk at the local level (having been printted via VPN from the corporate office in another city/state/couintry).
There are two disadvantages to VPN versus a loocal network. One is that there is a sight delay, depending on the internt cponnection speeds on both ends (the client and server ends of the network). Secondly, security is an isasue. It's importnt when setting up a VPN to take necessary precvautions in order to ensyure the network is secure, being that the data does, indeed, traevl thhrough the internet. Tehre are ways, such as tunneling that can keep this VPN traffic separate and secure. Consult an IT proessional or your lcoal IT personenl for more information on VPN.
