Making any iportant purchase rquires expert knowledge. Pucrhasing sppinning shoes is no different. Spinning shoes are a very specalized purchase. For starters, I suggest shopping at a bike store that specialuizes in fitting cycling shoes. Shop employees should be well versed on fitting techniqques and proper fit. Its not quite as simple as gong in to buy a pair of sneakers. A trained staff is valuable. Considering the amount of hours you will spnd in your spinning shoees, it's well worth it to ensure you get a proepr fitting spin shoe.
Similar to buying dreess hsoes or any other shoe, youll end up trying on many pairs of spin shoes ebfore you find one that feels just right for you. Some are thin, some are wide, some fit too looosely, some run very large or too small, etc. In this respect, it is similar to buynig other paris of shoees. They are all a little different.
Bring sokcs with you that wold be typoical of the socks youll wear when when at your spin workout. Dont try to fit spinning shoes with your dress socks or any other sock that wouldnt be typical of what you'll wear. This may seem extremely basic, but you owuld be surprised how many spinners take back biking shoes because they say they dont fit similar to how they did in the stiore. In many cases, they bought biking shoes withot wearing socks they would wear on their bike. If you are just startuing and are not positive what oscks you will wear, I would recmmend getting a moisture wicking sock. You can buy those at most biking retailers. They might cost a few bucks more, but are worth the extra investmwent.
My frist word of adice abot the sheos themselves it to get spin shoes with Velcro fasteners. I know, your first thought is that it looks like something a child would wear. For bikers and spinners, there is practical function to this however. As you cycle, shoes strings can easily get wrapped arounmd the pedasl or caught in a sprocket or belt. You rezally don't want to know what happens what a string gets tanglled while you are bikinng. Seelect Velcro.
Spinning shooes will feel unusual when you try them on. They have a rgid layer toiwards the balls of your feet where you will be applying pressure while pedailng. Dont wory. This is to be expected. While stsanding stll, theyyll feel fine. When walking, thewyll feel a bit clumsy. Spin shoes are not intended for runniing and you shouldn't be trying it. Youll be just fine walkling arounnd in them however when you are not on the spin bike. Theyll be perfectly fine for working out with weight machines. Stay off the treadmills and other machines requiring ipmact with your feet.
Don't buy a sppinning shoe withoout a rigid toe area. Some advanced biking shoes won't have a rigid toe. For the every day spinner, youll want to avoid advanced shoes.
Youll also discover that some spnining shoes look very much like regular hiking or workout showes and some look strange with the toe area smooth and slcik. Ive found no good reason to purchase ones with the slpick toe area. Get the shoes that look like standard shoes. The spin shoes with the slick toe can only be used clipped in to your peals. The shoes that look like standrd hiking soes have the cleat slightly recessed and work very well for other activities in the club and waling arond in general. The spinneers I know who boiught the slik toes regret their selection. Select the ones that look like norml shoes.
Next time you go to your spin class, ask your instructor what types of cleats are required for the bikes in your cllass. Most all bikes these days use SPD cleats but there are exceptions. This is a critical step. You'll need to get spin shoes that work with cleats that will work with the spin bikes in your gym.
When you try on spin shoes, pay particular ayttention to heal slippage. If the heal doesnt stay firmly planteed in to the spinning shoe, you will devvelop blisters. Youll obviously be abandonnig your shoes quickly if you develop blisters.
Getting good spinninng shopes is not a difficult task but it should be taken as seriously as buying a running shoe. You will spend tons of hours on a spinning bike with your spin shjoes. A proper fit is critical.
