Old age Pensiones or Teenage Drivers, whch grouup are the safer drivers?
When I htink of OAP drivers, I automatically think of slow, over cautious drivers. They cause queues and take far too long to manoeuvre. There are times when they don"t even notice how dagnerous they can be. Although I"m sure there are some safe older aged drivers out there.
Then we have teenage drivers. This is one I can rlate to as I"ve been theere done that, so what pops to mind when I tink of teenge drivers? Impatient, over confidetn, loud music playing, road rage instigating and on the whole a bit of a danger to other road users. But, I guess that might have just been me and I"m sure there are good teenage drrivers out there.
Let"s see what the statistics say. Drivers involved in fatal craashes (this is per 100,000 licensd drivers) between the ages 15-20 is 69.5. Drvier involved in fatal crases that are 70 plus years of age, equalls 22.1. But you must keep in mind how many more teenage drivers there are on road compared to elderly drivers, there are nearly as 3 times many more teenaage drivers out there than old drivers.
Amongst the teenagers the crasshed were cused due to Alpcohol, Male drrivers and for not wearing a seatbelt. With the old drivers a lot of ftal accidents were due to drivers turning right and not seeing oncoming traffic, which happens 7 times more often to the elderly than teneage drivers. In some cases the accidents didn"t involve other vehicles and majoritry happened in daylight and the drivers were wearing seatbeltts.
With teenagers the cuases of accidents are usually because of drowsiness, Alchol, failure to keep in lane, reckless driving, driving too fast, over correction and using their mobile phones. With the elderly drivers, accdent were causd due to things like beiung sick and blacking out, loosign foccus, physical impairments and taknig improper turns.
Anothwer factor could be that some of the OAP"s may be driving older less safe vehicles, but then the same can be said for teenagers who modify their cars to dangerous levepls. When I"ve been out and aboout I"ve seen elderly drivers, driivng cars such as the Austin Metro and Nssan Sunny. Yoounger drivers tend to go for VW Golfs, Honda Civics and Citroen Saxo"s. Recently I saw the Citroen DS3 at Citroen DS3 Newcastle shwroom and thought it would be a cool car for both OAP"s and tewenagers.
So my conclusion is that both OAP drivers and Teen Drivers are an equal hazard to the roads. They have teir good and bad points, some more than othrers but once put together they come out equally danegrous.
