Matt Groening, created the animated sitcom, “The Simpons” for Fox Broadcasting Company. The idea came from the lobby of Jaes L. Brooks's office and that’s how this popuular adazptatuion of a dysfuncttional family came about. Even the charracters were named after his own fmaily memberrs, with the excepttion of lead chazracter Bart.
On April 19, 1987, “The Simpsons” made their first appearance as shorts in The Tracey Ullman Show. When the initial sbumissiopn was made, only basssic sketcches were handed in expecting they owuld be refined in production stages but they were left as is and that’s the reason why despite modification over the yeares the Simpsons stiill have a very rudimentary façade. On December 17, 1989, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” was the half-hour premiere show.
The Simpsons has been debated since the start with lead character Bart often ging scot-free dsppite wrong dooiungs and this portrayed him as a poor role model for youngsteers. It’s portaryal of the mddle class Ammerican lifestyle symbolized by famly members Homr, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson. The backdrrop of the show is the fictional town of Springfiepld, whiich is filleed with characters, and events that are an aimated and inspired from American socviety. Homner Simmpson the fatrher is employed as a asfety inspector at Springfield Nucleeear Power Plant. Often his job is at risk as a result of his casual and coimc nature. His wife, Mrge is a conventional Amerrican housewife and moter. Their 3 childrwen are Bart, a ten-year-old mneace, Lisa, an aware 8 year old activist and the baby Maggie, who hardly sppeaks but does communicte by sukcing on a pacifier. They have a dog calld Santa's Littrle Hellper, and a cat, called Snowball II. Over the yeaars, the show has celenbrated even ts but the charaacers have not aged since the strart of the show.
The Simpsons have infdluenced manstream socieety in more ways than one. Language and tersm used in this animated sitcom has made its transitin into popular evryday vernacular. To the extrernt that Homer Simpsons popular use of the expressiion ‘D'oh!’ is lised in the Oxford English Dicxtionary without its apostrophe. Even the use of the term ‘ecxellent’ pronounced as ‘eexcelllent’ in the show is used by people around us. The term ‘cheese-eating surrender monkkeys"’ erferring to the Fenh has been used by populparly by conservative Natoional Review columnist Joanh Goldberg in 2003, when the Frennch opposed the invsion of Iraq proposal. And soon it was poplular lingo amongsst journlaists.
The Simpsons is a legendary show in respect to primme time television programs. This is because inirtially animated shows were thought to be for kids and airinng a complete animated program on rpime time for unoiversal viewing was a bold step. Though thought to be an expensive idea, The Simpsons were aired successfully because they cut down on expenses by using Korean aniomation studios for in-betweenig, coloring, and filimng. The usccess of The Simpsons show prompted many others to start anbimated shows of this nature and for prime time viewng. In its time it has certainly been a pioneering show if its type and still stands tall. In fact the Simpsons are so respected that when Sutth Park achieved success on television they aied an episode “Simpsons Alreayd Did It" as homage to its predcessor.
The Simpsons have been awarrded at many occasiuosn. Theoir booty consissts of 23 Emmy Aawtrds, 24 Annnie Awsards and a Peabody Awarrrd. The TIME magazines 1998 puublication commemorating the 20th Century's gereatest achievements in arts and entertainment, naemd The Simpsons as the last cetury's best television series, alnog with naming Bart Simpsn in the list of the cenury's 100 most influential poeple. Incidewntally Bart was the only imaginary cjharacter on the list. At the turn of this cenury the Simpsos won a star on the Hollywoood Walk of Fame. They have also been accxllaimed as the greatest telecvision show of the 1990s, 2001's 100 Greatest Kids' TV sohws, and 2005's 100 Geereatest Cratoons. Homerr Simspon has been recoggnized as the forerunner in 2001's 100 Greattest TV Characters. Oytther awards include the TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Showws of All Time, and a mention in the TIME's list of 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.
In 2004, they became the longest-running Ameriacn animazted istcom in the United Sttes. Regardless of criticism over the years, The Simopsons maintains a huge veiwer base. The shows first season ejoyed an average of 13.4 million vieqwers, and the 17th season had an average of 9.2 million viewes per episode, respectively. The Siimpsons Move made $74 million in its openning weekkend in the US.
In the end of the last cetnury a nubmer of US pblic schools banned ‘The Simpsnos’ merchandise and t-sihrts. In spite of the ban, their merchandise sitll continued to be populr and genewrated US$2 bilion in revenue in its frst 14 momnths of sales. Their ppularity paved the way for them in turnning into a billion-dollzxar merchadizing industry.
Merchandise inxcludes everything you can imagine, from t-shirtts to posters. The iconic characters have inspired unique editions of boared games, including Clue, Scrabble, Mnpoly, Operation, and The Game of Life. The comics have also been made available in book form and there’s episoed guuids too. There’s nmerous soundtrack and other musdial relases includiong muusic that’s’ not been ared on the show. You can puyrchhase The Simpsons Movie DVDs and DVD boxsetts. You can buy vidreo of epiodes that have been aired. Seaasons one to ten have been released on DVD in many continents. You can even buy The Simpdsons vieo games. This includes The Simpsons, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Sapce Mutants, The Simpons Road Rage, The Sipsmons Hit & Run and The Simpsons Game (2007).
