There are many myths regarding search engine optimization or SEO. As search engines grow and evolve so do the theories on how to best understand and utilize these tools. The myths grow due to a lack of rules for how to best rank your site. It is your job to keep updated on any changes made by a search engine to maximize your rank. Trying out various strategies is the only way to see what will work.

To help you maximize your site, here is a list of SEO myths.

It's a common myth that you need to create special search engine oriented pages to rank well. If you have some basic knowledge, you can rank well for any page on your site. In other words, you don't need a landing page that is specifically made for SEO. You don't need landing pages for organic search listings, unlike PPC, where they are necessary. So aim to get your traffic to land on one of your site's regular pages, don't build a special page for this purpose. If you have the problem of pages not getting enough traffic, the solution is not to build new pages, but better optimize the ones that are already there. This is a fairly straightforward principle if you understand that landing pages are only to help you convert your traffic.

Many people think that by running PPC ads they'd be able to increase or decrease their site's ranking in the SERPs. But you have to keep in mind that these two are independent of each other and have no influence as such. That's why you shouldn't spend your money expecting your website to rank higher in the SERPs with PPC. You should concentrate more on adding quality content to your site and building backlinks to ensure its rank increases. The best way to judge this myth is by using your common sense.

Moving on to our next SEO myth, many people think that they should only be optimizing one keyword on each of their pages. While there is no merit to this notion of only targeting one phrase on each page, still many website owners and writers of articles on SEO continue to repeat it. Those who cling to this idea say that it makes their pages more focused, which supposedly makes them rank better. However, if you write a page that is focused on only one keyword or phrase, you'll find that it's very hard to do without it becoming forced and artificial. You are also not using your space efficiently if you only use one keyword per page when you could be using more. Why would you want to optimize for just one keyword when you are able to optimize it for 3 or 4 keyword phrases? If you really want to optimize your page, use as many of your keywords as you can think of. This will bring you more quality traffic. Traffic usually comes from a variety of different keywords, which you should investigate for your own site by looking at your web analytics. You will have more success with the search engines if you target a variety of keywords on each page.

Another common misconception is that search engine optimization is about tricking the search engines into ranking you. If you set out to deceive the search engines, however, you will also be deceiving your target audience. If you get traffic using these methods, how well do you think it will convert? What SEO really involves is not tricking the search engines but providing them with the kind of quality backlinks and optimized content that they like. Tricks/tactics may also be about legitimate methods, they always don't have to be the wrong ones. You should be looking at the long term, not trying to get fast and temporary results.

Another myth that keeps doing the rounds every now and then is new companies or businesses coming up and saying that they don't need SEO because their market doesn't use search engines. This is actually a wrong thinking, especially nowadays when the Internet has grown so huge with hundreds of millions of users logging to it every day. The fact is, the search engines cover every possible niche, which you can verify by doing any kind of search you can think of. Google alone receives over 50 million unique visitors daily, and you really can't afford to ignore the power of ranking well.
