Home Remedies for Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are quite a common disorder. The stones are formed from the chemicals usually found in the urine such as uric acid, phosphorus, calcium and oxalic acid. They may vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as tennis ball.

Symptoms - Sudden pain when the stones attempt to pass down the ureters on their way to bladder. The pain is first felt in the side, moving on to the groin and thighs. Frequent desire to urinate, painful urination, scanty urination, blood in the urine, nausea, vomiting, sweating and chills.

Causes - Kidney stones usually occur when the urine is high concentrated due to heavy perspiration, insufficient intake of fluids or sedentary life style. Urinary tract infection, wrong diet, excess intake of acid forming foods, white flour, sugar products, meat, tea, coffee, condiments, rich foods and over eating are some other causes for kidney stone disorder. Lack of vitamin A and excessive intake of Vitamin D also leads to formation of stones in kidney.

Drink lots of water. By increasing your fluid intake, you increase your urine volume and decrease the concentration of stone forming elements. In short fluid intake such as water should be two to three litres per day.

Cut down on foods such as diary products, green leafy vegetables, etc that has high level of calcium.

Intake of meat, fish, and poultry should be lessened as they lead to increase in uric acid that forms stones.

Reduce intake of sugar, refined foods, caffeine, alcohol, soda and salt.

Eat more of fiber, vegetables, whole grains and vegetable proteins.

Cut down on oxalate containing foods such as chocolate, tea, rhubarb, cooked spinach and asparagus.

A tsp each of basil juice and honey taken daily for 6 months provides relief from this disorder.

A tbsp of pomegranate seeds (sweet and sour), grounded into a fine paste mixed with a cup of horse gram soup dissolves the gravels in kidney.

Eat 2 or 3 apples a day.

Watermelon, either eaten as fruit or taken as juice is one of the safest and best diuretics.

Boil 2 figs in cup of water and drink this first thing in the morning for one month.

1 cup of radish leaves juice can be take twice a day

Drink a glass of fresh tomato juice mixed with pinch of salt and dash of pepper.
