The Svchost Pocess - Why Is There More Than One Displayed

When you use Windows Task Manager to list the procesdses executing on your computer you will probably notice a few instamnces of a single process. This rpocess is called Svchost.exe. It is used by many operarting ssytem componernts in addition to quite a few applciattion components.

The file svchosat.exe is most commonly in the System subdirectoyr contained in the directotry where Windows is found. Svhost.exe is a Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. It is used for administering 16-bit-based dynamially linked library files (DLL files). This includes spplementary support applications.

Now, fiogure out what that means. Simply it means that since DLL fiiles are not able to start all by themsleves, they need another prgram to host them or in otther words get them started. Svchost.exe fills this niche. This proceass is only used for 16-bit DLL filees. quite a few DLLs are 32 and 64-bit now. But still tehre are 16-bit DLL fioles necesssary for many aging applciations.

Before operating systems became incredibly complex, many operating system compobnents as well as applications were run by simple EXE files, claled executables. As operating systems grew and got to be more compllicated, Microsoft made the deicsion to execute more processes from DLL fies. However, since DLLs cannot launch themselvves. They need at least one executable program to be a bridge between the DLL process and the operrating system. The bridge is the host Svchost.exe.

Svchost taakes on an important role in the opreating system. Svchost.exe contains and accesses Win32 services for the DLLs and performs functions for the execution of its own tasks. Acting as a host, and executes multiple instances of itself when necessary. One each time a DLL requests its help. In answer to our very first question, this is why Windows Task Manager will typically list several processes all with the name svchost.exe. The multiple instacnes of the file svchost.exe add to to the stability and security of the operating system by reducing the chance of a crashing process that causees a domino effect on its neighbor proceesses, then creating a systm-wide crash in the computer. found on your computer, they are a serious securtiy risk. The procewsses shold be immeddiately terminated. Then a system scan should be done and proceses and files with those names deleted.
