The Pros and Cons of Franchising

Many people who want to move away from the problems of traditional employment and set up their own home based business look towards franchising. So, just what are the pros and cons of franchising?

The list of advantages and disadvantages is long but let us start by looking at some of the main pros:

1. Buying into a franchise means buying into a business with an established track record and also means buying into a training and support program. This means that you can get your business up and running quickly and, most importantly, start seeing an income quickly.

2. Your business will be based upon tried and tested systems which you know will work. In other words, as long as you follow the franchisor's model you really cannot lose.

3. Running your own business requires knowledge and skills which only come from experience and so, if you have never run your own business, a franchise can provide you with excellent training on not only how to run a business but also on how to market a business.

4. You will not be the only franchise operator and the franchisor will generally sponsor events which allow franchisees to get together on a regular basis. This ability to network can be invaluable.

5. One of the biggest expenses for many new business owners is advertising and most franchisors will arrange for regional and national advertising which you can take advantage of saving you money or providing you with advertising opportunities which you would never be able to afford on your own.

Does this sound good? Okay, let us have a look at some of the cons:

1. For many people the whole idea of starting a home-based business is to be your own boss and have control over your own life. However, with a franchise you will be required to follow someone else's system and it can sometimes seem as though you have simply jumped back into traditional employment again.

2. You will find that you are your own boss and that you will not have a supervisor looking over your shoulder. Yes, help and assistance will be available if you need it, but you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of your business. For some people this is just what they want but if you are not the sort of person who can get up and go without needing a nudge then you could find your business going nowhere fast.

3. You will normally be required to pay ongoing fees or royalties to the franchisor and these will normally continue for as long as you operate the business. Now, if your business is flourishing, this should not be a problem but, if your business is not making a substantial profit, this can become an anchor which will hold your business back or even pull it under.

4. Although it might seem like you are the boss, in reality, the franchisor is the true boss and you will have to run your business in accordance with the terms of your franchise agreement, whether you like these terms or not.

5. While a franchise can provide you with a ready-made business based upon a proven business model it does not protect you from competition. This is an important point because, if a competitor does come along, you may have to take him on with one hand tied behind your back because of the terms of your franchise agreement.

So there you have it. These are just a few of the pros and cons of running your own franchise business and you will need to weigh these carefully before choosing this particular business model. Franchising is not right for everyone but it does provide an excellent opportunity for the right person to get a successful business up and running quickly and easily.
