Was Marketing part of the early churches

Many churches have wondered if they require to be using their money to advertise their church and this has caused a division in many church leaders. The division comes from some kind of mystical belief that some church leaders have about evangelism. They tend to believe God is going to bring people to their church without them having to do any kind of work toward that goal at all. It is true that Jesus said He would draw all men to Himself but He did tell us that we had a part to play. We have to lift Christ up before the people.

So is there any form of advertising God has used in times past? If you don’t believe that God has applied advertising in the past you have been in a cave. God employed some things to show Himself to people through several means! God has even shown Himself to men through creation. It is too done through His individuals who are told to go and preach the good news of Christ.

The very word preach means to proclaim. Most churches require to understand that preaching itself is a form of advertising that God commanded. Is there still a question about that? What is the church? The bible says the church is the body of Christ. So if we are advertising ourselves as the church then we are really lifting Christ Himself up!

The truth of the matter is that churches have been advertising since they came into existance. The members of the church would speak to whole crowds of individuals at one time. They would even be so well known through word of mouth advertising that individuals would line up outside the apostles doorways before they had a opportunity to eat.

With that said I want to ask you what type of advertising was applied by the early congregations? Of course the answer is word of mouth advertising. Individuals would be in a buzz about the apostles coming to town and would tell all people about it. As a matter of actuality Paul was so well known just by word of mouth that individuals praised God when they heard that he was now preaching the gospel. Paul would send letters as well to let people know when he planned to stop by so that the word of mouth advertising could get started.

So we can see that letters were applied as well as individuals spreading the news. Was there any other form of church advertising ideas individuals had that they applied? The truth is that if they had been doing the open type of marketing that we enjoy today things would not have gone so well for them. The laws of the land in those days ment that openly sharring your faith in this way would mean your certain death. That doesn’t mean they did not want to shout it from the mountain tops although.

There was of course one other way they spread the word about christianity... but it cost them a lot. In actuality it price them their lives. Today we have lines of people holding signs saying abortion is wrong. The lines of protesters in those days were lines of individuals willing to be eaten alive and killed for their beliefs. There has never been another way to advertise that makes such an impact as when we spend our lives to reach others. An act like that would without a doubt demonstrait how essential the congregations belief was in Christ.

What if today we found some way to show just how crucial our message is? I do not believe signs on the side of the road will get us there, nor will shouting at people on the side of the road that they are going to hell. So what can we do?

Remember that God wants His individuals to look and act in a way other than how you see the world look and act. Right now the church looks very much the same as other individuals. Maybe if we began following God our lives of service to Him would be the greatest form of advertising there would be?

Many individuals have a habit of quoting the words just live your life for others to see and that will be a witness for God. It will not work although unless your life looks different than all people elses life! Marriages in the so called christian world match those of the temporal world in numbers of divorce. This displays us that even if we call ourselves christians we may not be that since the bible said whom ever loves God keeps His commandments.

If we are going to get our church advertising in the right place we need to get this first step down. We have to come back to our God and repent or else we have to openly declare those who will not follow His commands as non Christians. This may cause some drama but our advertising of the word of God is being hurt otherwise. Drastic meassures must be taken. But the truth is that in these last days none of this advice will be taken.
