After I see people in private follow who present with anxiety, I like three classes to differentiate where they land on the anxiety spectrum. Not that there are not more, or hybrid-categories, however this is a methodology I've got found helpful.
1) Those propelled by anxiety
These people usually utilize anxiety as a mobilizing force to their advantage. Excess nervous energy is viewed as chance for growth, creativity, and outcomes. As a result of they are typically highly accomplished and innovative, they acknowledge that success begets success and challenge themselves despite the spike in anxiety levels and discomforts of change. "If I'm up worrying at three AM, I could as well come back up with a plan to begin my own business."
Or the PhD candidate who is used to being the best and brightest and will stop at nothing, despite the racing thoughts and over-taxed central nervous system.
They visit the house of tension, instead of dwell in it, or avoid it. Anxious thoughts are a barometer of what wants to be controlled, and although inwardly bothered, they explore what they fear. By confronting the monster, they eventually defeat their fears. They additionally tend to possess a healthy degree of psychological insight.
2) Those repelled by anxiety
They fight anxiety and strive and management it. As a result of anxiety results from the perception of danger, these people have problem accepting that anxiety, at least in tiny part, is a guest of our daily lives. They do not settle for that ambivalence is traditional, and typically worry what they cannot fully comprehend, or support.
Sadly, they are doing not see the benefits and self-awareness opportunities that arise from handling daily stress and frustrations.
They are not typically psychologically curious, and prefer solutions to understanding the origins of their nervousness. It is not that they're unconcerned with others' thoughts and feelings, as abundant as their emotional energy is consumed by fighting or fleeing anxiety
Change is viewed as tough and unnatural, and often fraught with resistance.
This is often the woman who doesn't want to accommodate any aspects of her childhood in therapy as a result of "That is within the past, and it doesn't have anything to try to to with my adult life."
Or the guy who needs to spar balls-to-the-wall-style in the boxing ring, instead of take time to find out defensive techniques, and perceive the mental game of boxing.
three) Those felled by anxiety
These people are full of intense feelings of hysteria and are often immobilized by it. As a result of shame could be a central feature of anxiety, they will hide their insecurities from others that will cause isolation and depression.
A ton of untapped creativity and output are lost. Inertia and self-pity take over and that they often see themselves as victims who lack management in life.
Thoughts are contemplative, brooding, and doomed. Participating them resembles a psychological arm-wrestle as a result of they dwell in anxious states and believe "There is nothing I will do to prevent feeling like this."
Modification is viewed as particularly scary, and although reality testing sheds very little credence to the likelihood of dangers manifesting, they continue to be stuck.
Some Solutions
- Deep relaxation in the form of respiratory exercises, muscle relaxation, or meditation.
-Reversing core beliefs. These are themes that run rampant and could have origins in childhood, but are not relevant today. "My feelings are not to be trusted." This is the child whose parents told him to "suck it up" rather than explore why he felt like this.
--Break down overwhelming tasks into little straightforward steps. Typically you will discover the task isn't therefore tough and additional rewarding than you thought.
-Practice mindfulness to remain targeted on the here and now, and what this means. Buddhism teaches that suffering will not result from reality but from the judgments we make regarding reality.
-Realize you do not should feel dangerous, and no one will create you are feeling uncomfortable different than yourself.
-Take action-whether or not the motivation in MIA. Tackle that dream despite the doubts. That master's degree you have been pining over won't materialize if stuck in bed all day.
-Reframe negative thoughts. "I just recognize I am visiting blow that job interview" becomes, "Whereas I'm nervous about that job interview, I will benefit from the expertise of practicing and sharpening my interview skills."
Psychologist David Balkan says that "suffering is the best motivator of growth." If you value yourself you will not accept anxiety. You may demand more from life. And if you often crash land that is okay. Increased self-awareness may be a nice launching pad. Years spent harboring fear, doubt, hopelessness, and heading off impending danger will not change overnight.
