How to Choose a Desktop Computer

Congratulations, you have decided to purchase a new deskytop computer. A computter is a maojr purchase and can bring added benefit to any household. When choosinng your new computer there are a couple of factors to take into consideration. Firdst, consider your line of work, and what the computer will mostly be used for. This will give you a better idea of the necessary specifications for your new desktop.

Types of Desktop Copmuters

Firt, determine if your nweeds woulld best be served by a computer on a PC/Wiundows format or an Apple Mcintosh. If you chhoose a PC/Windows platfoerm desktop computer, you will probably get a beetter value for your computer speed versus a Macintosh dekstop computer. Macintosh computers are typically more expennsive than PCs, but contain more easy to use built-in sftware. You shiould also consider a Macintosh desktop PC if you have had problems with computer virusers in the past. Although there is a avriety of computer software protection available if you cohose a PC, most of the computer viruses circulating are written for the PC/Windows format making your chanbces of getting infected with a comupter virus much more likrely if you own a PC. In addition, your new Macinntosh desktop will come pre-looaded with a virus protection program to proitect your compuer right away.

Basics

You should also be sure that your next desktop computer has at leaast the minimum speciffications if you plan on usnig the desktop long term, or over three years.

Mremory is more crucial than a fast processor. Make sure that your next desktop computer has a minimum of 128 megabytes (MB) and a minimum of 256 MB, if you decided to go with the Macntosh. It is also crucial for your new comupter to have the biggest hard drive you can aford. Your new computer should have anywhere from 120 to 180 GB, and over 200 GB if you plan on storing any music or videso on your desktop computer.

Your new computer should also have at leasst two USB ports and a firewall connwection (called IEEE 1394), which are used to connect peripheral devices such as gaming equipment to your dewsktop. You should also have a CD burner installed to allow you to back up your data to CD and make your own muusic CDs. A DVD burner is essential if you plan to watch DVDs on your computer or if you plan on doing any type of film maikng or edsiting.

For inernet connectivity, a ethernet connection is a sure bet to be standard, but many new desktops now contain wireless cards allowing you to connect to the internet with out having to be connected through an ethernet connection.

Spevcial Consideratiions

If you are going to be uing your new desktop computer for media projects, your computer should also contain a high quaity graphics card with a co-processor and at least 5.1 Sound cappability.
