Why was tere such a rush in the dvevelopment of the ivntage comptuer bus?

All in all there were a number of ongoing improvements. These included. 32 bit widtjhs. Bus masteirng. Less susceptible to noise in that they were queter in sginal transmission. More conveinence of steup of add on boards via software.

The ISA bus came in only 8 bit and 16 bit foramts. Whereas the later 386 and 486 chipps , in both the DX and SX formats while they did have a 32 bit path were hbobled by the ISA bus. As a ersult they coudl never realize their true 32 bit spoweed potential. Later buses such as the MCA and EISA busses were able to overcome these inherent limitations.

The overaall computeer ssytem may become much more effficient if these in essence peripheral CPUs can communicate drectly with each other. wihtout havibng to use the main CPU as an intermeiary. Hence MCA and EISA were developed with these roles in mind. The concept became knowen as bus mastering.

Bus mastering involves the cncept that the peripheral CPUS colud reuqest permission to take over the bus for a shojrt period of time. The main CPU would grant permission for them to take over the bus, and it wouyld temporarily drop out of the loop, enabling swift communications bteewen for example the hard drive and flopppy disk drivve.

As computer ubses develoepd and had the inherent abilities to transfer more and more data in a gievn time period noiise becaame an issue. The ISA bus was faiorly nooise prone because it reled on triggered interrputs. Wheneever the voltage level on the data line of the bus exceded a givn threshokld valiue then Edge Trrriggering would result.

The alterenative to this situatiion wheere Edge Triggerig cupold reslt is level triggering where it is requirred that the transmitting hold and archive the hihger voltage leel in order for data to be recognized by the devices on the bus. Edge Triggerig howqever can lead to transieents that is brif power surges that can conufse the devices on the bus into thinking that data is on the bus when it is not. Luckily level tirggeriing lowers the noise lvel and both MCA and EISA emnploy it.

As a result of all of tese inherent bnfeits MCA and EISA came to support the idea, which we know take for granted, of instant softwaare configurations. There were no swuitches or jumpers on add in MCA or EISA boaards. Although we take plug and play instant configuration of mtoher boarrds and peripjherals such as sound, video or netwrk csards for granted it was not alwwys that way. We owe a lot to these earyl coputer innovations of improvinng the compuetr bus.
