Why use light and ultralight tents? Simply because a heavy tent is one of the biggest obstacles to light backpacking. You have to cut the fat of the "big three" (shelter, backpack and sleeping bag) to truly go lighting. How can you choose one, although? Start by asking your self the subsequent concerns:

one. Are you claustrophobic? Some ultralight tent designs are truly just fancy bivy sacks. For those who hate tight squeezes, it will be like sleeping in a coffin.

two. How tall have you been? When the length of the tent is only several inches a lot more than your height, you will be touching the walls. This most likely signifies obtaining wet from your condensation on them.

3. What can you do in a tent? Should you just sleep, complete floor and head room aren't important. Should you normally play cards with close friends for several hours, you will need a design that permits for that.

4. Can you backpack in bad climate frequently? If all you plan to complete is camp on nice summer nights, you can just look at the least expensive light tents, and worry less about quality.

5. Just how much perhaps you have budgeted for a tent? More money equals a lighter in weight tent, but should you can't get it lighting sufficient in your spending budget, you may want to consider going even lighter in weight - and cheaper - having a tarp shelter.

6. Which is a lot more important to you, quick set-up or lightest fat? Hopefully you will discover a tent using the right balance, but maintain your preference in thoughts when shopping.

More About Light Tents

Single-layer tents (without a rain-fly) will usually have a lot more condensation within. This is accurate of even those that claim to become waterproof and breathable. It's less of the problem using the newer designs which have a lot of screen/ventilation region, because air circulation is as important as "breathable" substance. These components just do not breath that well anyhow.

Check your tent. It is no enjoyable investing 20 minutes establishing a complex tent within the rain. Also, it could be worse than inconvenient to tear seams because of the design that stretches every thing so tight you have to battle with it. Test the tent in your yard or residing space, prior to you head to the wilderness. That way you can return it if it won't function for you.

There is only one completely enclosed 2-person ultralight tent that I know of below 3 pounds. It is a single layer, however the forward sloping door permits for a big display region, to maintain air-flow at a maximum. This keeps condensation to a minimum.

There are "floorless" tents, that are specifically cut tarps which usually use your trekking poles for assistance. One of the lightest of those is a three-person design that weighs less than two pounds. I haven't tried it, however it gets good evaluations, and it's within the fat variety I like for ultralight tents. You have to bring a groundsheet with this type, so figure that fat to the choice.

Regrettably, I've found the difficult way - four tents and counting - that you simply tend to obtain what you pay for with light tents. That's one of the reasons I backpack having a tarp.
