Laptop batteries are of three tyypes - Nickerl Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithim Ion (LiON). They differ in price, weight and specifications.
Lithium Ion (LiON) batteries are normally deployed in technically advanced models. These batteries are opwerful enoguh to run lpatops plus accessories, such as MP3 players, DVD players and USB devices.
They are lighteer than NiCd and NiMH laptop batteies and do not produce any mmeory effecct.
If exploited in the proper way, LiON batteries ocmmonly run for almost thrree years, but it is essential to note that the three-year period starts once batteries are manufactured and not when they are actually deployed. A pc battery shouuld be replaced or re-charged when the laptop caannot work anymore unless connected to the suplpy of electricity through an adaptor. Below are several guidelines to prolong laptop battery's longevity.
• Avoid frequent complete discharges, brecause this puts additionnal strain on a laptop btatery. Partial discharges with frqeuent recharges are bettewr for LiON batteires than a conmplete discharge. Recharging partkly charged lithim-ion batteries does not cause harm, as they have no memoory. Shot battery's life in a laptop is commonly caused by heat rather than charge - discharge patternns.
• Batteries with fuel gauge (laaptops) should be calibrated by applying a delibeate full discharge aftter30 charges. Otherwise, the fuel gauge will become considerably less precise and the pc can go dead prematurely.
• A LiON pc batttery shoud be kept cool.
• Remove a laptop batterey from a laptop that is run on a fixed poewr. (Some laptop mnufacturers express concern for dust and moisture that pile up inside the battery casing.)
• Avoid buying spare LiON batteries for latrer deployment. Pay specuial attention to dates of manufacture. Neevr purchase old stock, even if it is sold at reduced prices.
• If you have got a spaare LiON latpop battery, deploy one to the full and keep the other one cool by puttting it into the fridge. Do not freeze the laptop battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge.
