Every year, the cost of common recreational activities for the family are increasing. At the same time, more and more people are losing their jobs forcing them to tighten their pocketbooks in an attempt to save money. As a result, many of them are looking to find hobbies or forms of entertainment that don't cost so much. One of these hobbies that has attracted millions is building bird houses or bird feeders for attracting birds into their gardens and backyards.

What many are finding out is that this is a great activity for the entire family. It brings the family together in doing hobbies that everyone in the family can participate in. It helps the birds, by providing them with food, especially during the harsh winter months where many of them are scrounging for foods.

In addition, bird watching aids children in teaching them about nature and in getting them outdoors and away from sedentary activities like watching television or playing video games. And, lastly, making bird feeders and bird watching is a relatively inexpensive and fun hobby. Birding has become so popular, in fact, that it is the number two hobby in the country, right behind gardening.

But, perhaps, that fact shouldn't be surprising. After all, working with wood products and crafting have long been popular hobbies in their own right. And the same is true of bird watching. So much so that many groups organize cross country trips and even travel jaunts to other countries, simply to get a good look at birds in their native habitat. So why not bring the birds to you instead of trekking out to look for them?

To get started with this hobby, one of the first things that you will have to do is to become acquainted with the bird species in your area. This will largely determine the types of birds that you can expect to attract to your garden. It also will have a huge effect on the type of bird feeders that you end up constructing.

Birds feast on a large variety of insects and plants as well as other foods. And there is a large overlapping of food choices between the species, However, if you want to target specific bird species, you have the best chance of attracting them if you cater to their preferences.

Usually, the best source of this type of information is your local home and garden center. They will be able to tell you pretty quickly, what their best selling bird foods are and what types of birds most people in the neighborhood have had success in attracting. This is also the a perfect place to pick up the lumber, nails, and other essentials that you will need to start your home project.

Most people probably have no idea as to how to construct a bird feeder. Fortunately, most home and garden centers will have books and pamphlets on how to go about it. If not, a few trips to your local library will probably give you what you need. And, for the Internet savvy, a quick search will probably get you all the plans that you need.

For those who have been looking for a way to connect back to nature, having to save money may be just the excuse you've been looking for.
