The willingness to consistently step out of their comfort zone is the behaviour that characterises high achievers and separates them from the rest of the field. High achievers are always stretching themselves; always challenging themselves to achieve ever-greater goals.

Top-athletes set goals that are way outside their comfort zones, not the kind of ’stretch goals’ that people are generally taught to set for themselves. It is indeed interesting to note that the majority of people who teach goal-setting, do so by encouraging people to set achievable, realistic goals, but that’s just not the behaviour of champions.

Champions really believe they can achieve outstanding results even before they actually become capable of producing them. In other words, they generally have the belief before they have the ability. And, beyond that, they have the desire that fuels their belief system.

Of course, it is important to be able to believe in our ability to achieve goals - top performers have that belief - but we too must work on ourselves in order to acquire the desire, the belief and the ability to do whatever is necessary, whatever it takes, to achieve our goals. If any one of these three important components is missing, then it will simply be impossible for us to achieve great things.

Taking a leaf out of the champion’s book, we need to work on our beliefs about what is possible for us. Naturally, working on your beliefs without working on your ability simply amounts to self-delusion, but we need to understand that our beliefs define the boundaries of our comfort zones and so impact what is and is not possible for us to achieve. This fundamental principle has become the cornerstone of modern sports psychology

If you want to achieve great things - and I know that you do or you would not be reading this - then it is your self-beliefs that you need to be working on so that you can have the courage to set goals that lie outside your comfort zone. When you do this consistently, you are using the very same methods used by the top achievers; and, you open up the possibility of achieving truly great things.
