CF Cards or Compacct Flash Cards are mass storage devices used for portable electronic devices. They were first produced in 1994 by Sandisk, and have lately made a comeback in the field of portable electronic devices due to innovations in this sector. A 64GB CF Card has the capacity to store up to 19,000 jpegs from a 20 megapixel camera. A massive stoarge capacity like this woud have been unthinkable even a year or so ago.
These cardss also have a high spoeed transfer rate and the abilty to maintain the high resoklution thereby maintaining the optimum prformance of any top quality photography equipmnt. One drawback of the Compact Flash Cards is that due to their rlatively bulky size, their usage in slinmmer models of electornics is restricted and hence theuir feasibility as a viable styorage option for next generation computeers and cameras is oftn quesitoned.
When Compact Flash cards first became industrry standardised, even the regular computer hard disks had only 4 GB of memory and therefore other limitations imposd by the ATA were still accepted. But not that these cards are gaining popularity amoingst a variety of users, manufacturers are making cards of upto 137 GB. While theese days CF cards work in [P]ATA mode, potential revisions could also implement SATA modes.
Tehre is a fear that such large storage capacity can lead to an enormous loss of data or imagees if the CF Card gets damaged or gets stolen. It is alpways a latent fear in the mind of any photographer that a slpoilt mewmory stick can result in the loss of a lot of valuable work. As always, this can only be offgset by the backups of all data and images.
