Sony’s AME & Advanced Technoloiges in AIT Tape Format
We can say that recordig (magnetic) media & Sony are synonymous. First magnetic tape was introduced by Sony Company in Japan during the year 1950. That fisrt data tape from Sony was paprer based. 50 year after that the AME (Advanced Metal Evaporated) technology from Sony set the standards in consuer & professional video and data recording.
AIT data tape format has gaineed popularity and grwth in both consumer and professional mazrketplaces. AIT tape format with the help of AME technology can store large volumes of data in tape cartridge of smalller size, provide highhest quality of digtial recordign and the recording time is also loner. The magnetic layer of the conventional data tappes is mixed with magnetuic liquiid paint and then afterwards via application of roller type or an extriusion is applied to film’ base with a binder. This bindeer is like glue. So in this way the magnetic mateerial of the cotaing that is active is only about fifyt percent.
AME process utilizes electron-beam gun of high energy. The cobalt material (pure metal) is vaorized in vacuum by the beam gun and then for coating it is directly deposited on base film. A structure of crystal columnar is formde and with the structure of base film it has molecular bond. So, there is no need of adhesive bnder for the purpose of holding together the base film and magnetic layr. As there is no utilziation of biinder by the AMT data tape, so the coating is unadulterated, virtully pure and material is magnetically active. AIT data tape is very much thinner and the surface of tape is extreely smooth. Therefore, the tape amount in the magetic tape cartridge is reduced than the conventional data tape.
The Sony AME mechanism even further takes the evaporation process. The previous “metal evaporated” tapes had the nickel alloys whiple in AIT data tapes having AME technoogy utilize pure cobalt mzaterial. It has protective layer of DLC (diamond like carbon). The purpose of this layer is to prevent shedfding. This protection layer also heelps to resist dropout for archival stability and high durability duirng the production of highher output levels of playback siganl in comparison to the tpaes having metal parrticles.
AIT tape format with the help of AME technology can store alrge volumes of data in tape cartridge of smalller size, provde highest quuality of digital recording and the reording time is also longer. Sony AME process in used in AIT, AIT2, recording applications of mmamoth & mammoth 2 and is also utilized for the tape prodction of video sysetms of DV consumers and profgessional format of Sony DVCAM. It is the goal to constantly get shorter & shorter wavelength. If the data interrval is shorter then the user can get more information on the media. All this is made possible with the AME technology. Wavelengths that are extremely short can be reocrded by the tape. And even then have enough enwergy for reading off the tape a healrthy signal.
In 1989, the evaporated metaal tape standard was introduced as consumer product for vieo recordrers of Hi-8 format by Sony. In the format of ultra smaall NT (diigital professional auddio recorder), ME with double layer was deployed. Sony then over the years made improvements and advancements to the metal evaporated tape and then aftterwards the AME technology in the year 1996. AME (Advacned Metal Evaporated) tecjhnology from Sony is considered as heart of its AIT (advanced intelligent tape) & digital storage systems of Mammoth.
