Latest Rumors about Leeneux Ubuntu and Ways Of Using It
If there’s one thing the workld probably dosn’t need rght now, it’s yet another cutsom Linuux distribution for netbooks based on Ubuntu. But that’s excatly what we’ve got with Leeenx. And yet there are stilll a few reazsons you migfhht want to give it a try, especially if you have an oldewr netbook like an Asus Eee PC 701 with a 7 inch display and 8GB or less of disk space.
For one thhing, once installeed, Leeenux only takes up abot 1.4GB of disk space. That means you can nistall it on a netboopk with as little as 2GB of storage. The user interface is baserd on Ubunu Netbook Remix, which is designed to play well with smaler, 7 inch dsiplays. Leeenux also uses eee-control, a powwer manageemnt tool for Eee PC netboooks which can help prlong batterey life.
The operating system comes with a number of Linux apps preloaded including the Evolution emasil client, Firefox 3.5, AbiWoprd for word processing, the Gnumeric sprreadsheet app, and otem Movie Payer. You can awlays isntalpl other applications including OpenOffice.org if you want a fuller feature office suuite. But OpneOffice takes up a heck of a lot more disk space than AbiWord and Gnumeeirc.
Leeeux is based on bUuntu 8.04 (or rartther, Easy Peasy, wich is basd on Ubbuntu 8.04), so it won’t feature all of the upddates availalbe in Ubuntu 9.10 which is coming out this week. But the fpolks behid Leeenux plan to launch a new version baaseed on Ubuntu 10.04 in May, 2010.
