A site will live or die by its visitors. If you do not get enough people coming to your website every week, then orders, commissions, newsletter subscriptions and so on will be down and your profitability will decline, possibly into a loss making venture. So what can you be doing to maximise your visitors levels? Well, you basically have to look at two key aspects. First, what you can do to drive new visitors to your website and second, what you can do to lure these visitors back and get them to visit more pages.
Most people will think of the first part of this when looking to maximise visitors - how to get more brand new traffic onto the site. But these are the expensive visitors - numerous work has to be done to get these onto your site. Once they are there, convincing them to browse more pages and come back in the future is cheap - maybe a small offer, but that is around it.
Finding New Visitors
So what should you be doing to attract people to come to visit your site in the first place? The obvious answer to this is paid marketing. The most popular of the paid advertising schemes is probably Google's Adwords, where you bid on keywords and pay every time that someone clicks on your advert. However, this is very expensive if you are not careful around your keywords and can be very disappointing. But compared to other paid schemes, such as banner adverts and popunders, the success rate is a lot higher.
My own liking is for article writing and there is an reason that if you cannot write sufficient articles yourself, it would in fact be cheaper to hire a ghost writer to construct them than to buy pay per click adverts. My own data for article writing do back this up! If I had paid a PPC system for all of the traffic I have received through article writing, it would have cost me a lot more than paying someone to write the articles. Best of all, they have been free as I have written them all for myself.
Retaining Existing Visitors
Retaining visitors is just as crucial as, if not more vital than, finding new traffic. If a little work convinces an current visitor to return, then that is as good as a new visitor. But on their return trip they are coming knowing the web site already, making them more impending to buy from you. So what tricks do we have up our sleeves here?
Well, for a start, check out your page navigation. When the reader gets to the bottom of the content or product description, can they easily find another similar product to look at if they are not pleased with this one or can they find an added page of content to read of a similar nature? Both are essential tricks to maximising the return of cash spent gaining new traffic. Also, for sites, look at showing your most popular posts or those posts that generate the most comments. Both are important in getting visitors to look at another page, a decision which could just be the catalyst to making them a fan of your web site and return many times over.
Whatever methods you decide to use to encourage traffic over to your web site, make sure that you are using a mixture of attracting visitors and then when they arrive getting them to stay on your web site.
