Most parents would be surprised to learn that their child knows more about the Internet than they do. Children are now able to access the Internet in a number of places including school, home and at the home of friends. Since you cannot stop your child from accessing the Internet, it has become extremely important to discuss how they can protect themselves and the people around them while on the Internet.

The best way to broach this topic is to sit down with the entire family to discuss the issues and to put in place safe guards to protect each other. Being able to protect your child whilst online is not as hard as some would believe.

Protecting your child from online predators can be done if the parents are prepared to implement several different methods. One of the easiest ways to approach this is to gain your child's trust and to get them to open up about their daily online activities. Another method that works is to use the online time as a family event with everyone having joint access. Get your child to listen to their own feelings - if it doesn't feel right then it probably isn't so call in mom or dad to help.

The following tips are well worth discussing with your children. You can make them rules although a voluntary code works better. Teach them the dangers of the online world and the kind of people that wander around the net looking for vulnerable children. As a parent, it is our duty to our children to teach them of these dangers and these tips will help.

While we do teach our children to be polite, they need to be firm in their approach to others online. It is also important to tell them dangers of downloading anything particular images and videos - they may not be downloading what they think they are downloading.

One of the most important aspects of online safety relates to that of identiy. This includes all contact information including email address, telephone number, address, school and of course their name. They should also be careful about others who may provide contact information. This is another popular method that predators often use to recruit children.

Most social sites now incorporate features that make it easy for users to hide their details. Your child should be encouraged to hide their personal details from all but their known friends. It should be informed to the child that whatever is displayed on the internet is not always right and that the child should differentiate between the right and the wrong. The internet is full of real people, some have very good intentions and some very bad intentions. The child needs to be able to protect themselves whilst still enjoying the experience.

Throughout the process of how to protect your child when surfing online, parents of the child should monitor their child’s surfing activity and this can be one by installing the latest software’s which help do this job easily.
