With all the potential for scams concerning diamonds, buying diamonds online almost seems unthinkable! However, you actually can purchase diamonds online, without any problems – as long as you are careful.
Begin by thinking about why you are not going to a local retailer first and would prefer using the internet. For many it is price, for others, convenience. Due to low overhead costs, online jewelers and wholesalers are able to offer lower prices. If the price is too good to be true then it probably isn't true so beware overly cheap prices.
Of course, buying online brings with it the advantage of a huge selection to chose from. When shopping offline, you are limited to the selection in the stores in your general area. There are no limits to what is available online. Trust is a big factor when shopping online so take care and ensure the seller is at least reputable.
Before shopping, learn as much as you can about diamonds – especially cut, color, clarity and carat weights. It is much harder to be scammed if you have some knowledge of these terms. A person that knows their product is able to confidently buy online and rarely makes mistakes.
Don't rush. Don’t purchase the first diamond that you see that interests you. Instead, look for similar diamonds for sale. Spend some time comparing what is actually available online. Once you have found the lowest price, start doing your investigation. You know about diamonds, you’ve found a diamond that you love, and you’ve found the lowest price – but you are still quite a ways away from actually purchasing that diamond!
Ask the seller for some proof of their professional status such as associations they are a member of, Check the sellers refund and return policy to see how fair they are. Find out if the seller offers other services such as free delivery, mounting your diamond or sizing rings. Remember, you can also do a search on the internet to see if there are any reviews or complaints listed. Don't forget other agencies such as the BBB Online - they may have complaints listed as well.
There are independent services such as AGS or HRD that provide diamond grading reports - ask for a report from one of them. You should one of these reports before making a final decision. Finally, use a reputable escrow service for high dollar diamonds – preferably one that will have the diamond appraised while it is in their possession. Escrow services act as middlemen whereby the seller sends them the diamond and you send them the money. Once the escrow service has had the diamond appraised and everything is as per sales contract, they will ship the diamond to you and forward the payement to the seller.
Escrow services are the best way to ensure that everyone gets what they are entitled too. You must remember that sellers also get ripped off at times - this way, no one gets ripped off and the transaction is completed smoothly.
