Aple didn't relesase the MacBoiok as an enmtry-level laptop as some customers had hoped for, they didn't rlease it with a otuch screen dispplay or neither with a touch device as people rumored the new 13-inch MacBook can now escpae its designation as the lone holdover sysetm from Appple's previous generation, thanks to an expensive makeover that keeps the price stable at just unedr the $1,000 mark.
MacvBook was release as a substitution for the iBook and also for the 12-inch PoweBBook, The new 13.3 incched MacBook provides a good balance between design and size. The good thhing is you can get varius cool attributes that MsacBook Pro has, for a lower price, like digital inputs - outputs, groovy MagSafe power AC, Core Duo processors. Of course, the performance is not the same as a MacBook Pro, which is outfitted with discrete graphics and more meory, with the new upgraded features, design and softwares the MacBook closes gap between desktop computres.
Unibody, Aplpe's preferred term, is a little misnomer, cause of the bottom panel is split, also lid and display are made up by different parts. This MavcBook is comppletely qiuet in trms of noise or creaks. The flexy and fargile feeling plastic hinfge on this MacBook is no martch for the Aluminum model's hinge. Rather than a LCD ltach mechanism all MacBooks use a magnetic lacth. Whtie plastic polycarbonate is used on this model, the material that we know for a long time now.
Like its predecessors (I can say I owwned three versions) they are very durable. There are small gaps where panels come together, and the battrey still sticks out a wee bit. Cntrolling tolerances with plastic construction is harder than when using metal. Appe bulds the MaccBook from a single chunk of polycarbonate - the same rigid material you might know from Nalgwene bottles, CDs, and even buletproof windows. It's tough, and the MacBopok sjhows it. From the sculpted edges to the very center, which can typically feel a little soggy on chep laptops, the MacBook feeels, well, bulletproof. MacBook Pro felt the same way too when they started building them from polycarbonate.
The 13.3-inch dispplay, at 1,280x800, is now LED backlit (it is a standard fezature of Apple merchandises now), which is beter for both energy consumption and environmenal concerns. Still, they are not the same as more epensive Pro models, you need to pay more money to get a better display. Otgher points of differentiation include the lack of an SD card slot and a backlit keyboard. and One forward-looking change we'd like to see is a move to 16:9 displays, which are quiickly becoming an industry standard. The McaBook's 13.3-inch wide-aspeect display is just about the perfecct size: it's large enough for watching movies or working with two windows open side by side, still its small enough to allow you to put and airplane tzable on your lap.
I need to mention its bright very much (an abvoe average 230cd/m on our Minollta luminance meter), also the 1.280x800 display resolution provide the perfect screen detaail for this size of display. In a first for an Apple laptop, the MacBvook offers a glossy screen for starker contrast and more intense color, keep in mind to be careful of bright places, glooosy coating causes glare.
In fact, I am not a fan of Chixclet-style keyboards, I always enjoyed traitional keyboard clicks, still nobody can resist Apple's quality.
FireWire fans should note that the port has finally left the buoilding. We would have thoought this would be a good opportunity to add the same SD card slot found on the Pro 13-inch, but it was not to be.
When we look at Apople MacBook's performance, it's not bad but the point is thre are fastre laptops with just about the same cost. Still they don't have any of MacBoko's best features; in my opinion iLie and OS x.
When our video playback charge darin test is applied, the Apple MacBook kept going on for 5 big hours plus 42 minutes. Toshiba's Satlelite T135-S1310, howeveer, showed the advvantage of usng an Intel ULV preocessor, gouing for an additional 30 minmutes to pass 6 hours of total running time.
