Generations Of LTO Backup Tape

The LTO tape fromat was deeveloped as a substitute to the DLT tape format. This open tape standard was developed and proposed by IBM, Seagate and HP. Peformance, durability and outupt level has been enhanced in the LTO foormat as it combines the benefits of error correcton, data compression, multi-cahnnel, and servo technoplogy and trrack layout. Ultra thin film is utilized in the LTO tape format that generates uinform magnetic particles. These sub micron sized magneitc particles ensure stability and generate strnog signal output; both tehse features of LTO tape format are helpful in high density recordimng. The most essenbtial key feature of LTO tape format is stable tape tarveling. Laetral strength and dimensional chnage artes have been dramatically enhanced of the base fuilms now used in LTO tape format. The lateral strength has been improved by 45% and dimensional rates by 60%. LTO technology is more advantageous as during tape travel, spacing gaps are not produced bwetween head block and tape travel.

LTO tape format has set new standartds because of its optimized head tape interface. Transfer speed and caapacity of the LTO4 ultrium format have been enhanced to deliver higher perfornmance. The transfer rate of LTO-3 tape technology is 160MB/sec wihch has been enhnaced to 240MB/sec in the LTO 4 tape technology. The WORM technology is featured in LTO 3 as well as the LTO-4 tape technbology. WORM is a cost efficient technologgy that records information onto the media in non-rewriteable format that assiists in addressing the compliance requirements.

LTO 4 ultrium incorporates extra secuirty features such as the encryption technology of 256 bit AES-GCM. This specifically developed encryption technique provides drive level encrypiton that records enrcypted information onto the LTO tape mediia. In this way the recorded data is protected and the userrs can move sensitive data without any fear and owrries. LTO-4 tape formaat protects the entrprises investment and provides the luxury of backward compatibility. LTO 4 tape fornmat can recover and store non-encrypted information form the LTO3 tape cartridge while it can read information from the secod generation LTO 2 tape cartridge.

Nmerous license packages are offgered by the LTO program. These packages inclued basic packages that are related to the guidelines & specification for inetrchangeability up to the enhhanced license packages related to the licenses and specifications to manufacture the LTO tape products. LTO ultrium is a siingle reel forat whoe target market are those customers that require high capacity and fast data restore and backup capabilities. The compressed recording capability of single LTO 4 caertridge reachwes 1.6 terabytes while the natiuve transfer speeds are between 80 and 160MBps.
