I've just read a study coping with appetite-suppressing drugs, principally one called Phentermine (that's the generic name; it's branded with other names similar to Fastin).
I had to read the report a few before I understood it...packed with long words and clinician-speak!
But it may seem to me until this drug deals with the signs and symptoms of the problem, i.e overeating as opposed to the problem itself, i.e why people overeat.
People overeat for a number of reasons, just one boredom, depression, stress and sometimes just habit.
Eating is pleasurable; it stimulates "feel-good" chemicals in the brain. Chocolate is renowned for this, surprise, surprise. In any case, what exactly is more than a family-sized bar of Fruit and Nut? Sex? Miles behind!!
On a tougher note, this good feeling doesn't last. And that means you continue eating. Eventually it gets to certainly be a habit that you can't stop. And don't wish to. That are your system ballooning. So you make a huge effort and follow a weight loss diet. Big mistake! (See our other articles for the issues we think of diets!). Currently you're miserable. All of you can be alone with is food. By Tuesday lunchtime you've given up. Therefore you mentally beat yourself up. Thus it runs....
The bottom line is, with no technobabble, there is certainly an area in your brain that indicates in case you are hungry. So you eat. There is another area that indicates if you receive had enough. Therefore you give up eating.
And you can override these "switches" if you try hard enough. Hence eating disorders, both those invoved with which you might eat inadequate (for example anorexia) and those individuals in which you eat an excessive amount of - linking to obesity, feeling unmanageable, and resorting to desperate measures. At this point you bend into the likes of Phentermine, which works by interfering with the "switches", therefore decreasing your wish for food. Phentermine also stimulates the hormones which control your body's "fight or flight" response, which switches off of the "hunger" sensor and reroutes circulating blood into the muscles and less blood into the stomach and digestive system prepared for the command for "Action!" Which never comes.
Keep in mind it; if something startles you, otherwise you need to suddenly run to grab a toddler away from the road, food is the single last thing you think about! These appetite-suppressing drugs disrupt the chemistry in your own brain. They often merely be obtained on prescription, and that stone is only after a thorough medical check-up - they won't be prescribed in the event you have certain heart problems as they definitely narrow small veins and may cause critical disruption towards the oxygen supply towards the heart. They will be able to also raise the pressure behind your eyes, to make sure they won't be prescribed if you have glaucoma. Or overactive thyroid. Or maybe a roots or history of kidney stone. And often you may have to have got a Body Mass Index over 30 (i.e obese) for consideration.
Still, it seems like Phentermine is a positive change on the former drugs utilized for appetite control Amphetamines. Yup, I kid you do not. Still the major problem using them (independent of the side - effects) was that folks became addicted! So if they didn't keep taking them, they endured withdrawal, sometimes becoming seriously ill.
But Phentermine comes with long-term side - effects; only one exposure to anaphylactic shock (oh lovely!), dry mouth, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), shakes or jitteriness, anxiety, insomnia, the loss of fat from the body sexual libido, rise in systolic pressure...Shall I continue? And of course not classed as addictive, they could be habit-forming, causing warning signs withdrawal.
Also to cap all that?
You cannot take them completely as your body becomes tolerant and they also stop working!
