One of the most important electric appliances in the home is the dishwasher. It is a miracle tool that allows one to conveniently clean dishes, pots and pans. However, most people end up abusing its convenience by not using the dishwasher properly. This is how most electric appliances break down, when they are improperly used. Thus, here are some simple steps on how to use the dishwasher properly.

Use the proper dishwashing detergent. Check your dishwasher's user manual and you should see a recommended detergent by your manufacturer. Use that detergent as it will be best based on the structure of your washer. Do not, under any circumstances, use a regular washing liquid. This will not work because it will create excess foam that will damage your dishwasher and the suds can leak out of the washer. If you are out of your dishwasher detergent, go to your nearest convenience store and buy one instead of risking it with regular house detergent.

Place plastics on the top rack as these are items that can easily break. Make sure your plastic utensils, plates and cups are dishwasher safe.

That being mentioned, make sure all the items you place in your dishwasher are dishwasher safe items. Delicate glass, wood and copper are not safe to put in this automatic washer. Delicate glass may break and cause a mess in your washer. Wood on the other hand, can easily crack with the pressure of the washer, and the shards of wood can end up contaminating the rest of your dishes.

Do not block the dishwasher's sprayer. The sprayer is usually located at the bottom of the washer, so do not block this by laying a cookie tray flat and right on top of it. The best way to maximize your washer is to make sure that the sprayers can reach all of your utensils and plates, allowing them to be cleaned properly. Check your user manual to know where the sprayers are situated.

Scrape off extra food from your plate. Even though most dishwashers are now more powerful at removing food, pre-soaking dishes that have crusted stains will help in making the dishwasher's work easier. Also, if you leave too much extra food on your pots and pans, it will create harmful debris that may end up ruining your washer in the long run.

Position your dishes, pots, cups, glasses and utensils properly on the washer. Forks, spoons and knives should be on the cutlery trays. They should not be crammed, too much cutlery on the trays will not allow the detergent and the water to wash all the pieces thoroughly. Cups, saucers, pots should be positioned facing down so that water will not collect on them. Flat wares like dishes need to be nestled upright so they will not block the sprayers.

These simple instructions should help lengthen the life of your dishwasher. Like other electric appliances, the dishwasher can serve you longer if you make sure you and your family use it correctly.
