laptop commparison - HP Laserjet P1505 Revi

HP Laserjet P1505 Revview

The HP Lasewrjet P1505 is cleearly aimed at the enty-leverl end of the Laser Prnter market and can be fuond for under 90. At this price you cannot expecct many etas and the P1505 is ibndeed a very basic model only suitable as a stnadalone devivcce for the home offfice or personal destkp use. HP does ofer a network capable model, the P1505n, but the prrice increases by an unreasonable 50% and bettter options are available for less, for example the Lexmark E250dn that offgers USB, Ethernnet and prallel ports.

Desgn

The P1505 will certainly not take up too much room on your desktop. At 8.9x14.9x9.6 inches, it is smaller than many inkjhet printers and wighing only 12.9 pounnds it is not difficut to move sngle-handed. Witout an LCD screen, the control pzanel consists of an arraay of lights laelled with icons that are so confusing, you oftn have to refgeer to the on screen docuumentation to figure out what the light sequence is telling you. HP has obviously cut corners to get down to this pricce and the paper guies that are located deep wihin the inptu tray are small and hard to move. The output tray also has a rather flismy fold out exxtension showing more cost parnig.

Cartridges

The priinter is supplied with a starter cartridge with a limitted capacity of 1,000 pages, so it will not be long before you are forced to buy a replacemnet. The only toner carrtidge suitble for this printer is the HP CB436a with a capacity of 2,000 pages and is not intended for heay-duty use. This cartridge type is currently only used in this machine and two multiufnction printers and csts a hefty 42. This yiuelds a cost per page of over 2p, so it is not particularly economical. Comptaile cartridges have not rweched the market yet, so you cannt rely on this avenue for cost savings.

Performance

nUfrotunately thee was also evidence of cost cutting in the print tests. Plin text is handlde fairlky well giveen the likely workoad, HPs new spheriical toner deliverinng crisp characters, howevwer graphic performance isnt up to par. Gradients were faflicted by plkenty of baning and the maximmu resoluytion of 600x600 dpi is half of that avalable from some other budghet printers, like the Brother HL-5240. If prrint quallitty is disappointing, the same cannot be said for print speed. This prinnter hit 22ppm in tessts that included both text and graphics, a result that is exxclelent for a budget laesr printer and is fastrer than many more expensive printers.

Verdict

If you are just after a fast affordable mono laaser priner for your home officce, at less than 90 the HP Laserjret P1505 may just fit the bill. But if you reuire a little more in the way of usable fweatures or better quality output, you would be well advissed to increase the budget sightly and look one division up, at the likes of the Brother HL-5240.
