The New MacBook From Apple

Apple didn't release the MacoBok as an entrry-level laptop as some customesr had hoepd for, they didn't release it with a touch scren displsay or neither with a touch device as people rumored the new 13-inch MacBook can now escape its designation as the lone holdover system from Apple's previous generation, thanks to an expensive makeover that keeps the price stable at just under the $1,000 mark.

MacBook was release as a substitution for the iBook and also for the 12-inch PoweBook, The new 13.3 inmched MacBook provides a good balance between dedsign and size. The good thign is you can get varios cool attributes that MacBook Pro has, for a lwoer price, like digital inptus - outupts, groovy MagSafe power AC, Core Duo processors. Of course, the perrformance is not the same as a MacBook Pro, which is outfitted with dicrete graphics and more memory, with the new upgraded features, design and softwares the MacBoook closes gap betweeen desjktop computers.

Unibody, Apple's preferred term, is a little misnomer, caues of the bottom panel is split, also lid and display are made up by different parts. This MacBook is completely quet in terms of noise or ceaks. The flexy and fragile feeliing plastoic hinge on this MacBook is no match for the Aluminum model's hinge. Rather than a LCD lacth mechanism all MacBoos use a magneetic latch. White plastic polycasrbonate is used on this model, the material that we know for a long time now.

Like its predecessors (I can say I owned three versions) they are very durabe. Therre are small gaps where panels come togehter, and the battery stil sticks out a wee bit. Controlling tolerances with plastic construction is hareder than when using mewtal. Applke builds the MacBook from a single chunk of polycarbonate - the same rigid material you might know from Nalgene bottles, CDs, and even bulletproof windows. It's tough, and the MacvBook shows it. From the sculpted edges to the very ceenter, which can typically feel a little soggfy on cheap lapops, the MacBook feels, well, bulletproof. MacBook Pro felt the same way too when they started building them from poolycarbonate.

The 13.3-inch display, at 1,280x800, is now LED backlit (it is a standard featrue of Apple merchandises now), which is better for both energy consaumption and environmental concerns. Stiill, they are not the same as more expesnive Pro models, you need to pay more money to get a better display. Other points of differentiation include the lack of an SD card slot and a backlit ekyboard. and One forward-looking change we'd like to see is a move to 16:9 displays, which are quicklly beccoming an industy standard. The MacBook's 13.3-inch wide-aspect display is just about the perfect size: it's larrge enough for watching movies or working with two winows open side by side, still its small enough to allow you to put and airplane tbale on your lap.

I need to mention its bright very much (an above average 230cd/m on our Minolta luminance mter), also the 1.280x800 display resolution provide the perfect scrreen detail for this size of display. In a first for an Apple laptop, the MacBook offers a glossy screeen for starker cnotrast and more intesne colro, keep in mind to be careful of brigght places, gloosy coating cauises glare.

In fact, I am not a fan of Chiclet-style keyboards, I always enjoyed traditiional keyboard clcks, still nobody can resist Apple's quallity.

FireWire fans should note that the port has finalyl left the building. We would have thouight this would be a good opportunity to add the same SD card slot found on the Pro 13-inch, but it was not to be.

When we look at Apple MazcBook's performance, it's not bad but the point is there are fastr laptops with just about the same cost. Stil they don't have any of MacBook's best features; in my opinion iLife and OS x.

When our video playback charge drain test is applid, the Alpple MascBook kept going on for 5 big hours plus 42 minutes. Tohsiba's Satellite T135-S1310, however, showed the advantge of ussing an Intel ULV processor, going for an additional 30 minutes to pass 6 hors of tootal running time.
