No doubt that Twitter is an unique social media site, and it has proven to be one that can be tough to crack for business if you try to mold it to your way of doing things rather than the opposite. Therefore you really should take advantage of sending direct messages to all who follow you in addition to a warm hello to new followers using Twitter's autoresponder expressly for that purpose. The message you send out is just the beginning, and a nice greeting and 'thanks for the follow' will make a positive impression on people.

People are tired of being spammed these days, especially with fake offers that are out to scam them off their hard earned money. The first impression that you make on your followers is important, so avoid using the dollar sign in your direct message because that may just send out the wrong signal. No promotions that are just over the top in any way, and simply be real with people. Usually people will not un-follow you in any numbers, if at all, but that could change radically depending on your messages. The worst thing you can do is put a promo message in your autoresponder message for new followers to see.

It is always a good idea to be aware of things such as un-follows, however we generally have found that is not an issue if you are not giving people a reason to do it. This is mainly because you don't want your automatic direct message to tip off your new followers and make them feel uncomfortable.

Usually some people will un-follow if they feel you are sending too many promotional direct messages, or you are doing it too soon. The more you focus on giving high value to your followers without irritating them, the better it is. We offer this as a type of indicator you can quickly reference to see if anything is going wrong. Be sure to test your messages, and you do not have to send the same one to everybody, either.

Be straightforward with your links in direct messages just as a courtesy to your followers.

People are tired of getting hit with ads and marketing, and that is why a site that offers solid content is best, in our opinion. If you put a link internal to Twitter, then people will have no interest in that. So this is another area where a good dose of common sense will serve you well.

So, you now know that connections and relationships are the thing at Twitter - they are most important so use that DM autoresponder.
