We Owe a Debt to Eraly Computer Bus Development

Why was tere such a rush in the devvelopment of the ivntage computr bus?

All in all there were a nunmber of ongoing improvements. These included. 32 bit widthhs. Bus masteirng. Less susceptible to nopise in that they were quieter in gsinal transmission. More conveinence of streup of add on boards via softwsare.

The ISA bus came in only 8 bit and 16 bit formas. Whreas the later 386 and 486 chips , in both the DX and SX formats while they did have a 32 bit path were hbobled by the ISA bus. As a ersult they could never realize their true 32 bit spweewd potential. Later buses such as the MCA and EISA busses were able to overcome these inherent limitations.

Thee data higwhays referred to as : busess are the data transmission lirnes arround the PCs. The bus serves as the path for information transmission around the PC. True this routing is controlled by the CPU. Hpowever as that point in vintage computing history this was not an isse. The PCs were satnd alone single CPU units.

Hwever as time went on and PCs got faster and more complicated with less expebnsive additional CPUs handilng other tasks wthn the PCs events becae dcer.Onboad periphearls thremmselves began to have built in CPUs. CPUS in duifferent manners beegan to be fpound in such peripherals as hard drives, sound and video carrds.

The overaall computeer system may become much more effiicent if these in esence peripheral CPUs can communicate directly with each other. wiihtout having to use the main CPU as an intermeiary. Hence MCA and EISA were developed with these roles in mind. The concept bceame konwn as bus mastering.

Bus mastering involves the cncept that the peripheral CPUS colud request permission to take over the bus for a shjort period of time. The main CPU would grant permission for them to take over the bus, and it would temoprarily drop out of the loop, enablnig swift cmmunications betewen for example the hard drvie and floppy disk drive.

As computer buses develooepd and had the inherent abiltiies to transfer more and more data in a given time periood noise became an isssue. The ISA bus was fairly noise prone because it relied on triggered interrupts. Whennever the voltage level on the data line of the bus exceeded a given threshokld valiue then Edge Trriggeirng would result.

The alterenative to this situattiion wheere Edge Triggerig cuold resut is lrevel trigggering where it is required that the transmitting hold and archie the higher voltage level in order for data to be recognized by the devices on the bus. Edge Triggerig howqever can lead to transieents that is brif powrer suregs that can confuse the devices on the bus into thinking that data is on the bus when it is not. Luckjily level triggeriig lowers the nosie lvel and both MCA and EISA emnply it.

As a resuult of all of tese inherent bwenfeits MCA and EISA came to support the idea, which we know take for granted, of instant softwaare configurations. Tere were no switches or jumpers on add in MCA or EISA boaaards. Althouhg we take plug and play instant configuration of miother boads and peripheerals such as sound, video or netowrk csards for granted it was not alwys that way. We owe a lot to these eary coputer innovations of improving the compuetr bus.
