Children who are home schooled may or may not be socialized in a beneficial way, depending on the whole picture. It really comes down to how much attention the parents pay to ensuring that this aspect of their kid's education is not neglected. Parents must never neglect the social factor in children's maturing, as this is just as important as what they learn in books.

You can't always go by what a child seems to want, as some children are shy and will tend to avoid socializing. If parents go along with this tendency, children can grow up in an isolated manner and not develop good social skills. That is why the parent has a responsibility to have a clear understanding of the dynamics inherent in homeschooling. That's why kids who are home schooled must have social as well as academic activities on their daily schedules.

Parents are aware of the concerns regarding developing healthy social skills in homeschooled children. So the natural result of that concern is to ensure there are adequate opportunities for social interaction. There are many options for parents to include social excursions as part of their child's education. Parents make sure their homeschoolers are involved in the extracurricular activities offered in their communities. When you think about this, you can find a direct contrast with the usual experience for most children in public schools. Parents of kids in public schools typically believe their children are getting the socialization they need at school so they don't make the effort to actively encourage their children to participate. It also seems that homeschooled children generally develop a greater interest in the arts. But again this is part of the effort to make sure these children have a healthy and active social life. So the result is to find homeschoolers involved in classes for performing arts such as drama and dance. Parents who home school also enroll their children in music and art classes. These classes enhance both the intellectual growth of their children and their social environment. Parents of homeschoolers may be more proactive about their children's socialization then they would normally be.

There seems to be a trade-off in the degree of socialization, but there are other considerations as well. There are many negative social encounters that the homeschooler can be spared from attending public and private schools. The damaging effects of an institutional school environment can make that reason very significant. This would be true for those at a public school who would be at a social disadvantage. There is far more of an important impact based on the positive and healthy advantages.

The issue of education, homeschooling and socialization is full of complexities.

Home schooling can provide children with some definite benefits, such as one-on-one instruction that's not possible in most schools. But it is clear that the parent/ teacher has enormous additional responsibilities. If children are going to grow up in a balanced manner, they must be given plenty of social opportunities as well as academic instruction. A well-rounded child who is home-schooled could possibly have the best of both worlds.
