Perhaps one of the most significant series of events regarding the socialization question took place years ago. A couple of maladjusted students killed a large number of their classmates at Columbine High School, the worst such incident in the nation's history. Unfortunately this wasn't an isolated incident, as similar shootings have since taken place. Now, school security is much tighter in many schools as a result of this. Homeschooling appeals to parents who don't want to subject their kids to the risks of modern public schools. There is even less of a potential issue if the homeschooling parent allows their children to participate in various local homeschooling activities.

To help solve the socialization issue, try seeking out other families in your area who also home school. While you can find support and activity groups online, there are some safety concerns with this approach. And since there are so many homeschoolers across the country, you should have no problem finding a family in your area. Then you may be able to contact them, or they can also introduce you to other local families. But since the internet has become such a social vehicle, it's a natural place to look. Of course you can always start your own group online or even create a Facebook group for people in your area.

In many cases, the financial situation of the parents plays a significant role in the socialization of a home schooled child. Most communities have dozens of potential places, events and activities where children can actively socialize.

Yet many of these opportunities cost money to join, and this isn't affordable for all parents. So whether or not the home schooled child can take part in all these activities will depend partly on the financial situation of the parents. Another potential complication occurs when home schooled kids feel they are missing something by not attending a public school. This is why parents shouldn't guard their kids too much from the outside world, as this can end up having the opposite of the desired effect.

If children don't feel free to communicate openly, it's hard for them to be socialized in a positive way. In most cases, school tends to stifle more than encourage the kind of communication skills kids need. Between peer pressure, bullies and teachers of questionable competence, schools are seldom the ideal places for kids to express themselves. This discourages many kids from participating in classrooms and is hardly conducive to them learning. This does more to reduce a child's self esteem than to nurture it. Homeschooling, meanwhile, allows kids to develop the kind of qualities that give them true confidence. The child or student knows the parent will not be heavy-handed. If there are other kids present, it will probably be the child's brothers or sisters, who will be taught not to laugh at each other. It is entirely possible that the question of socialization rests more on the quality of that process. It's true that children may learn some valuable social skills in school, and perhaps form true friendships, but they can also suffer many damaging consequences. So then a parent could feel like choosing what is ultimately best for the child. There's not necessarily a correct decision that applies to everybody. As we have discussed, there are serious and legitimate concerns regarding the safety of children in public and private schools. This is something you really have to look at closely in order to ensure the safety of your children.
